TITLE LOGISTICS COST ANALYSIS FOR 8 TON VEHICLES IN SUPPLY CHAIN
ABSTRACT Logistics costs of the various economies are estimated to be different. It is forecasted as 9 percent of GDP for US, 11 percent of the GDP for JAPAN, and 12 percent of GDP for France and Korea, 18 percent of GDP for china and in India it ranges from 12 percent to 15 percent of total GDP expenditure as per the various studies. In one panel study it is noted that .5 percent decrease in logistics costs (relative to GDP) leads to a 2 percent increase in trade and a 40 % increase in the range of products that are exported out of country. The logistics sector in India is unsophisticated, unorganized, neglected by policies and imbibed by less skills. India relies heavily on its roads for transport – roads account for about 65 percent of freight and 45 percent of passenger traffic, respectively. A significant player in the movement of goods, the trucking industry is highly competitive. Truck operator profits depend on operating costs and freight rates. Factors that plague truck transport include low capacity utilization, poor road quality, vehicle overloading, high transit times, barriers to free movement and safety concerns. Fluctuating fuel prices and high toll charges increase the running costs of the trucks. Tire maintenance is also major factor in deciding operator profit. In the trucking industry, the economies of utilization exist rather than economies of size. Economies of utilization are nothing but mere increased utilization of fixed assets and resources to increase output and hence cover fixed costs. Thus even a small change in equipment use has a large impact on the costs incurred by the truck owner or the transport company. Costs are normally calculated in terms of cost per ton, cost per km and cost per ton km. Similarly, performance measures are measured in performance per km, performance per ton, performance per ton km, performance per hour, performance per hundredth weight and performance per trip. The reason so many parameters exist is that truck costs are a function of decisions made by the transport company or the truck owner. Truck characteristics like, truck aging, truck driving, trip incidents and tough Indian roads lead to unique costing for a particular movement or a transport company. The present article focuses on the problems of truck operators and gives a brief explanation of variable costs incurred in trucking sector and how these costs will have an impact on the operational profits and revenues of 8 ton commercial vehicles by performing the multiple regression analysis for a total run of 300 kilometers, 600 kilometers and 900 kilometers.
